NIL THRILLS
Chutes and Thank Yous
About
Have you ever been sitting home on a Friday night with friends thinking:
-
I want to play a board game tonight - something that doesn't require much thought; silly with a hint of alcohol.
-
If I have to play Settlers of Catan one more time, I'm gonna lose my mind. No - I don't want to trade sheep for ore!!!!
-
I just want to get weird and laugh with my friends (or strangers or anybody really).
-
When was the last time I was happy?
If "Yes", you are in luck! Welcome to Chutes and Thank Yous -- the [drinking] game where you laugh (and cry). The game where nobody wins, but it ends eventually.
What You'll Need
-
1 Marker (and some pens)
-
1 "Board" - This can be cardboard, recycled paper, a pillow case, an old bed sheet...etc. A plain material that is at least 1 ft X 1 ft
-
1 Ruler (not required but helpful in "Board" set up)
-
100ish Thank You cards - as a substitute, you can use any cards around your home (index cards, envelopes and/or ripped up pieces of paper work just fine).
-
1 Die per Player (ideally, but if this is not possible, all players can share one die)
-
1 Token Per Player - Something to represent "you" in the game. This could be a bottle cap, a pen cap, a gummy bear, popcorn, spare change..etc. For the boujee players out there, feel free to recycle the pieces from the monopoly game you have in the attic.
-
IDEALLY - 10 - 30 Beers (cider, wine, hard liquor are also allowed). Drinking is not mandatory, but it would be cooler if you did.
Set Up
BOARD (Itself)
-
On the "Board" draw a 1 ft x 1 ft grid contain 144 1 inch boxes. See photos above for details.
-
Number the boxes 1 - 144. 1 will be in the bottom left and 144 will be in the top right. For example, row one will contain the numbers 1 - 12, row two will contain 13 - 24.
BOARD (Details)
In each of the boxes, please draw 1 of the following symbols. You may leave boxes blank. A box cannot contain more than one symbol:
X - as many or as few of these as you want
O - as many or as few of these as you want
★ - a single box may contain one star
Across the board please draw chutes. These can be long or small. There can be many or few. Hint: the more chutes you have, the longer your game may take.
THANK YOU(S)!
Distribute the cards (papers) among your friends (players) evenly. However, if your friends (players) are not funny, give them fewer cards.
On each card the player must write a punishment or reward. These cards will be used throughout the game.
Example Rewards -
-
"Every time a 2 is rolled, all players must say a compliment about you"
-
"The player across from you will serve you drinks for the rest of the game (or if the cards reset)"
-
"Sit in the comfiest chair in the room, if another player is sitting in it, kick them out"
Example Punishments -
-
"Wear 5 coats for twenty minutes"
-
"Finish all of the unfinished/old/opened bottles of wine in the fridge"
-
"Put 3 ice cubes down your pants"
It is suggested that you do not create tasks that are illegal, or super perverted. THANK YOU! Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
How to Play
-
Everyone starts in BOX 1. The person who can hold their breath the longest goes first. Then, the game continues clockwise.
-
Each player takes turns rolling their die. The player then moves their token up the grid N number of boxes - based on the number rolled by the die. The game ends when someone lands on BOX 144 or rolls a high enough number that there are no more boxes on which to place their token. For example, if Ashley rolls a 6, and she is on BOX 140, she ends the game.
-
If a die is rolled off the table during a turn, the roller must take a sip of each player's beverage.
PLOT TWISTS
-
If a player lands on an X - Everyone playing the game must drink. If you are not playing with alcohol (and drinking ain't your thing), instead, everyone must bang on the table (ground, wall, other hard surface, etc) and shout, "Hardy, HAR, HAR!"
-
If a player lands on an O - The player must pull a Thank You card from the pile and complete the task at hand (the reward or punishment). It is encouraged to give thanks after you complete a task you particularly enjoy (punishment or reward). Do not return the card to the pile from which it came (yet).
-
If a player lands on the ★ - Everyone holds hands and appreciates each other.
-
If a player land on a box with a chute, they must slide their token down the chute. If at the bottom of the chute there is an X, O, or ★, the player must participate in the associated plot twist.
-
If at any point in the game you run out of Thank You cards, all cards are returned. Any outstanding cards that require long term punishments or rewards are terminated. For example, if Alex pulls a card that reads, "For the next 40 minutes, you can only talk in Kanye West song lyrics (googling allowed)", he is allowed to stop, although his 40 minutes are not up.
-
If at any point in the game a Thank You card has a punishment or reward that is deemed "un-doable" by a 1/3 of the players, the player that picked it does not have to do it. Instead, the player must finish their drink and the game continues. For example, if Kibbee pulls a card that reads "Coat your face in peanut butter and take off your pants", she does not have to do it pending 1/3 of the players agree.
-
Sometimes game play can exceed 3 hours. If over 2/3's of the players agree that the game has been played for too long -- rolls can start counting as double. A roll of 6 is now a roll of 12, a roll of 5 is now a roll of 10, etc.
